In the course of explorations in 1971 members of the Happy Wanderers caving club discovered a massive chamber, which they named Battlefield Cavern. The first person ever to squeeze into the cavern was teenager Hilda Guthrie. It is unlikely that this will turn out to be the final secret of such an extensive system.

We welcome responsible cavers who explore the delicate beauty of the underground environment with respect, There is no access fee. We therefore as a result limit Caving to the lower Passages only .THE BATTLEFIELD CHAMBER IS OUT OF BOUNDS TO CAVING. Failure to comply will result in Caving permision no longer be given to that Caving group for future visits. Entry into the cave must be before 10.15am and all group members must be out by 3pm. Access is available to groups of two or more who are members of a caving club affiliated to a recognised body such as the British Caving Association.

Caving at White Scar

Since Christopher Long first entered the system in 1923, White Scar Cave has attracted cavers. It is (so far as is presently known) a 6km-long resurgence system. A British Cave Research Association survey of the cave was under taken by Dr A C Waltham and friends. The results were published in 1977, reporting the system’s length as 5955 metres and its vertical range as 73 metres. A full-size copy of Dr Waltham’s survey drawing is displayed in the information centre at the cave.

"Not for the Faint-Hearted" by Mike Cooper describes 50 harder caving trips in Yorkshire, including Broken Finger Pot, Boggarts Roaring Holes and Mossdale Caverns.

Scientific Research

Applications for the carrying out of bona fide scientific research will always be considered. The cave management is keen to assist where possible with the advancement of knowledge about the underground environment.
